Card Present

What does card present mean?

A Card Present transaction refers to a payment scenario where the cardholder physically presents their credit or debit card to the merchant at the point of sale. This typically occurs in retail where the card is swiped, dipped, or tapped on a payment terminal. The card’s magnetic stripe or chip communicates directly with the terminal, enabling the merchant to verify the card’s authenticity and process the payment in real-time.

Card Present transactions generally offer enhanced security compared to Card Not Present (CNP) transactions, due to the physical presence of the card and often the requirement for a PIN or signature. This direct interaction helps reduce the risk of fraud, making CP transactions a preferred method for in-person payments. Additionally, they often benefit from lower transaction fees due to the reduced risk of fraud and chargebacks associated with in-person transactions.
