What is a cookie?

In technology a cookie is a small block of data created when an individual goes to certain websites on their computer. The cookie is created by a web server and kept on your computer for later reference. The purpose is to track activity and visits you make to said website. It also tracks cookies for websites with shopping carts. For example, say you add an item to your shopping cart, the data is then used to recall later should you leave the website. When you go back to the website you will notice the items are still available in the shopping cart. Without cookies clicking a new link within the website would result in the shopping cart resetting itself every time.

A cookie is referred to as a web cookie, a browser cookie, or sometimes an internet cookie.
